Hi, I’m Juel Mahoney, and welcome to the Wine Woman & Song archive. The blog is no longer active, but I’ve kept these posts online as a record of my years in the wine trade and of the community that grew up around this small corner of the internet.

About the writing
I started the blog after moving from Australia to London, where I was working in the fine wine trade and studying for my WSET Diploma. It began as a way to keep track of what I was tasting, and over fifteen years it grew into a collection of essays, region guides, vintage reports, travel pieces and food pairings, with the occasional detour into perfume, film and fashion.
Blogging changed a great deal in that time. In the early years, the community lived in blogrolls and comment sections, and a single post could start a conversation that ran for days. Later came conferences, press trips and Twitter tastings, then Instagram, and by the early 2020s blogs sat alongside newsletters, podcasts and YouTube. You can see that shift in the style of the posts as the years go on.
If you’re new here, the Selected Essays are the pieces I’d hand you first. You can also browse by Place, People or Palate.
Why Wine Woman & Song?
The name comes from a Beastie Boys lyric, which borrows from an old saying often attributed to Martin Luther: “He who loves not wine, women and song remains a fool his whole life long.” Versions of it turn up in songs and cultures around the world.
A few boring bits
Samples and press trips were always credited, and samples only appeared if I thought they would interest readers. I never accepted guest posts, paid posts or any payment for positive reviews. All written content is my own, so please ask for written permission before reproducing any of it.
Thank you to everyone who read, commented and shared, and for all the generous support along the way. You can get in touch here.
Made with love in London and around the world.
